Not a whole lot new going on. We're a little less than 48 hours away from our flight home. We are anxious to get home. We know Yi Yi is leaving her culture and are aware of all the different emotions that will be going on during this trip. We are excited to see Lane again and have him meet his sister. He's excited as well. Yi Yi's tb test was fine. Thank you for the prayers for that. She seems to be doing quite well. We had a translator conversation last night. We had gone out for a walk and Brad and noticed she was really quiet when we got back. During the walk we ran into the couple who adopted a little 3 year old boy from her orphanage. We talked with them for awhile. Anyway, after returning to our room she was really quiet so I asked her if she was ok. She finally told me she was sad. I asked her if she would tell me what was on her mind. The electronic translator is great but it translates from Chinese to English a bit oddly. After some trial and error we think we figured out that she said that she was happy to be adopted and that she was thinking of her friends at the orphanage and worried about them. Seeing the little boy had reminded her of her orphanage. We did our best to reassure her that we will work so she can contact her friends via the facebook equivalent that is used in China. She said they did have access to a computer and Yi Yi seems to know her way around the computer very easily. We talked to our guide today and repeated everything and she too made sure that was all that was on Yi Yi's mind and she said that it was. On a lighter note I have a funny story relating to my ears and China's belief in luck. Yesterday on our way to the American Consulate our guide came to us on the bus that was transporting us. All the other children in our group that are being adopted are 3 or younger. So our guide does spend some time with us making sure that Yi Yi has questions answered and just giving us some information in general. Ok, so here we are on the bus and our guide started talking about how Yi Yi seems a very sweet girl and seems to be adjusting well to her new parents. Then she looks at me and tells me that my ears are helping. She goes on to say that I have "big Buddha ears" and in China that means I will have all the luck in the world. She didn't stop there. She said I have REALLY big Buddha ears so she knows I will always be quite lucky and she knows Yi Yi knows it too. OK, so I'm keeping the smile pasted on my face while hearing myself being described as an amazing speciman of the best of Buddha ears. I keep glancing over at Brad and can easily tell he's choking back laughter while he has a smile posted on his face. OK, so end of conversation UNTIL we get back to the hotel. We were walking back in and there is a lot art work, statues etc. for sale where we are walking. I hear Yi Yi say "Mommy, that's Mommy". Brad and I both look up to find her pointing to a gold colored Buddha-ette. Yes, a female Buddha. The guide smiles at all of us and Brad finally can no longer control his laughter. I just pasted the smile back on my face and kept walking. The things in life God uses to make us laugh. I still find it quite amusing. I've known my entire life that SOMEDAY my large ear lobes would be useful for something. (wish it had happened in high school instead). |
